How to set up a file for print

Bleed, safe area, and the difference between a file that looks sharp on a phone and one that looks sharp on paper.

Build the file at the final size, then add 3 mm of bleed on every edge that runs to the cut. Keep type and logos inside a safe margin of about 5 mm.

300 DPI at the final size is the practical floor for photographs. A logo should be vector — SVG, AI, or a PDF saved from a vector tool — so it stays sharp on a card and on a banner.

Screen files are usually RGB. Print uses CMYK, and some bright blues and greens shift. Send the file anyway. The studio can convert it and flag anything that will not hold.

PDF is the safest handoff. PNG and JPG work for photos and simple layouts. AI and PSD are accepted, but they cannot be previewed in the browser until prepress opens them.
